Quick trip to the cloud : Deploying a retirement web application to a cloud-based server.

SITUATION

Many companies have found that deploying web applications to cloud-based servers is an easy way to increase scalability.  However, this value of this solution diminishes rapidly if the transition to the new environment does not go smoothly. Stakeholders at a multi-national financial institution wanted to take advantage of the benefits of deploying their new demo application to a cloud-based infrastructure, but they also wanted to ensure that the transition would be completely seamless and invisible to end users.

The institution turned to Digital Foundry to procure and set up a new cloud server account and to deploy the new application to this environment.

SOLUTION

Our engineers and consultants reviewed multiple hosting options and benchmarked them against the baseline (the current, locally hosted solution).  Once our client stakeholders evaluated their options and made a selection, we prepared the environment, deployed the application and provided support. This turnkey approach gave the stakeholder team the confidence of knowing that they did not need to worry about additional technical overhead, nor did they need to dedicate additional time and resources to future site maintenance related to the deployment.

RESULTS

By understanding their technical support needs and to help mitigate any future application deployment and support issues, we helped our client:

  • Review a range of cloud-based hosting providers: We provided a list of options for a variety of hosting providers for the new demo application so that project stakeholders would be able to have one reference document to review in their decision making process
  • Set up the hosting environment so that the site was running in the cloud within a one-day turnaround: With our extensive experience deploying applications to cloud-based servers, we were able to build, set up and launch the new demo application site for our clients all in a short one-day timeframe. This allowed the client to put the application to use in the field the next day, to maximize ROI.
  • Establish a regular maintenance schedule for the site: In order to provide continued support and ease of use for our client, we set up a monthly maintenance schedule so that, if the site encountered any cloud server or deployment issues, we could help to quickly address them with minimal impact on the end user
  • Innovation

Using cloud-based hosting made it easy to plan for scalability.

Project team

Once the project stakeholders made the final decision regarding the new hosting environment for the demo application, the engineers on Digital Foundry’s project team wasted no time in setting up the accounts and the basic infrastructure of the server so that the application deployment could be done in a matter of hours rather than days. The team’s ability to work quickly but effectively was instrumental in the rapid turnaround for this project. picture of John
“A cloud-based hosting solution was the right fit for this project, in part, because the site needed to be up quickly and it contained very little confidential information. The client provided good input, so we were able to help them select and set up the right solution quickly.”
