planning and documentation support for a global supply chain initiative

sony ericsson mobile
communication (SEMC)

SONY ERICSSON MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS IS A GLOBAL PROVIDER OF MOBILE MULTIMEDIA DEVICES WITH INNOVATIVE APPLICATIONS FOR MOBILE IMAGING, COMMUNICATIONS AND ENTERTAINMENT.

challenge: planning a new supply chain strategy and onboarding partners

To meet growing demand, Sony Ericsson elected to outsource its manufacturing to a number of strategic EMS/ODM factories using a centralized inventory model.  Due to the scale of the project, SEMC required additional expertise to plan the systems of communication that would provide the supply chain visibility, flexibility, and efficiency they required. In addition, they needed a team that could provide the onboarding documentation required to communicate the new strategy to 1,000 supply chain partners once the onboarding process began.

solution: implement a communication system with low barriers to entry

SEMC engaged Digital Foundry to help design a new supply chain model, plan the global software initiative it required, and write documentation and instructions for their partners. Digital Foundry worked with SEMC to automate the centralized inventory model with web-based forms that required very little back-end investment on the part of SEMC’s numerous suppliers. The information suppliers provided fulfilled a number of SEMC’s objectives by supporting collaborative forecasting and order management as well as inventory and financial visibility.

Digital Foundry - SEMC

Working closely with SEMC’s global project team, Digital Foundry analyzed the supply chain’s process strategy, created technical process maps, and wrote a full set of implementation guides for SEMC’s suppliers.  With business, technical, and user communication in hand, SEMC had the tools it needed to onboard partners of all sizes quickly.

benefits: improved supply chain efficiency and rapid partner onboarding

Automating the central inventory model achieved SEMC’s business objectives by providing increased supply chain visibility and flexibility as well as better forecasting capabilities.  In addition, SEMC benefits from improved data accuracy, reduced manual processes, and better communication and error handling. With Digital Foundry’s kit of onboarding tools, SEMC was able to educate their suppliers quickly and saw rapid adoption of the new processes.
