Fawcette Technical Publications wanted to build Dev•X, the ultimate Website for software developers who work with Microsoft or Java development software. The site needed to provide an online forum for software developers, as well as a source for development tips, informative articles and valuable product and book reviews.
Solution: a scalable, feature rich website with easy editorial access
With its reputation for developing rock solid corporate Websites, Digital Foundry was selected to plan, build and deploy the original Dev•X site. The Digital Foundry solution included an extranet with over a dozen content administration systems to allow for efficient editing by the Fawcette publishing staff. These editorial sub-sites allow authorized Fawcette staff members to easily update the site in real time using a Web browser. EventCenter, developed by Digital Foundry, was built into Dev•X to provide Internet access for scheduling and publishing events. Using EventCenter, visitors can check event dates and availability and reserve seats online.

Additional technologies on Dev•X include Membership, Personalization, Chat and News services. Dynamic components of the Dev•X site were developed to handle all content, membership, ad rotation, event calendar, commerce and personalization services.
Knowing the popularity of Fawcette publications, Digital Foundry designed the Dev•X site architecture to scale. Shortly after launch in the late 90’s, Dev•X had well over one hundred thousand members and received tens of thousands of visitors each day. By simply adding Web servers, Dev•X was able to support exponential growth following its launch and throughout the dot com boom.
