Exploring new opportunities with rapid
software prototyping

Nokia

Nokia is the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones and has recently begun to expand their business by investing heavily in online services to complement and enhance the mobile device experience.

Challenge: Exploring the potential of new web-based functionality

Nokia wanted to explore a number of online service options quickly and efficiently. While they had some Web-based assets, they wanted to explore additional online experiences and plan for future functionality.  Nokia needed a team of consultants and engineers that could gather requirements from numerous stakeholders around the globe and explore the feasibility and potential added value of new online experiences in a limited timeframe.

solution: Rapidly Develop Prototypes for Proposed Functionality

Digital Foundry was hired to work with Nokia and its innovation partner to create a series of prototypes for Nokia’s ideal multimedia experiences. The prototypes demonstrated the Web-based tools Nokia could offer its mobile device users and provided code that could be developed for large-scale use at short notice. To build the prototypes quickly, an expert rapid development team used SCRUM principles to investigate and develop a prototype concept.

In order to coordinate feedback from the many Nokia stakeholders involved in the project, Digital Foundry made collaboration easy with a tool that captured comments

within the prototype itself.  The interactive DF Commenting Tool delivers feedback directly to the concept’s consultants and engineers for review and implementation. To facilitate the exchange of ideas near and far, Digital Foundry also hosted a Wiki for the project stakeholders. From these tools, qualitative and quantitative data was gathered and analyzed by the core team. By immediately implementing responses to this constant stream of feedback, Digital Foundry quickly developed prototypes that met the expectations of Nokia stakeholders.

BEnefits: A confident assessment of a new project's future

Working with Digital Foundry’s prototypes, Nokia’s senior managers gained the insight they needed to move the project into the next stage of development in a timely manner. The prototypes succeeded in capturing the goals Nokia wanted to achieve and became the foundation for the development of an extensible version of the product. In addition, constant implementation of new ideas gave stakeholders greater insight into possible future functionality.
